  • “Hypermiling” drivers from U.K. and Norway, using eco-friendly driving techniques, set three new fuel-efficiency records in the all-new Ford Fiesta hatchback and Ford Ranger pickup
  • Fiesta 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol and 1.5-litre TDCi diesel models each set new fuel-efficiency benchmarks at the U.K.’s annual MPG Marathon
  • Ranger travels 1616 kilometres on a single tank of fuel during drive through Norway, Sweden and Finland
  • Ford shares tips that helped drivers exceed official Fiesta fuel-efficiency figures by one-third
  • The all-new Ford Fiesta hatchback and Ranger pickup have set three new eco-driving records at fuel-efficiency challenges, including two new records for Fiesta at the U.K.’s annual MPG Marathon.

Powered by Ford’s 120 PS TDCi diesel engine and driven by journalist Paul Clifton and engineer Ian McKean, Fiesta won the MPG Marathon Overall Champion title by averaging 2.3 l/100 km fuel-efficiency during 570 kilometres of driving – a 12 per cent improvement on the previous record and a 34 per cent improvement on the model’s official fuel-efficiency figure.*

Powered by Ford’s multi-award-winning 125 PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine and driven by former-Ford works rally team Andy Dawson and Andrew Marriott, Fiesta averaged 2.9 l/100 km fuel-efficiency to be crowned Petrol Champion – a 14 per cent improvement on the previous record and a 33 per cent improvement on the model’s official fuel-efficiency figure.*

“Maximising fuel-efficiency not only saves money, but smooth driving can also be fun thanks to the new Fiesta’s brilliant steering and suspension,” said Andy Dawson. “Using less fuel also means reduced emissions, limiting motorists’ environmental impact.”

Using “hypermiling” driving techniques that can help any driver maximise fuel-efficiency, the Fiesta drivers improved on the models’ official fuel-efficiency figures by one-third – equivalent to gaining an extra 14 litres of free fuel when filling the Fiesta’s 42-litre fuel tank.

Ford’s six simple eco-driving tips are:

    1. Service your car and check the oil level regularly. Correctly maintained cars operate more efficiently
    2. Check tyre pressures monthly. Underinflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by up to four per cent
    3. Do not carry unnecessary weight in the boot or cabin
    4. Remove empty roof racks and keep windows shut, especially if driving at high speeds. This will reduce wind resistance, reducing fuel use by up to 10 per cent
    5. Drive smoothly, looking as far as possible ahead – and behind. Sudden acceleration and braking penalise fuel economy
    6. When accelerating, select higher gears as early as possible. Ford models have gear-shift indicators to optimise gear selection

The Norwegian duo of Knut Wilthil and Henrik Borchgrevink went even further in a Ford Ranger 2.2‑litre TDCi diesel, to set an unconfirmed world record for the furthest distance travelled in a pickup on a single tank of fuel.

By carefully planning their route and taking advanced measures such as only parking on downward slopes when taking breaks – enabling more fuel-efficient restarts – the experienced “hypermilers” covered 1616 kilometres through Norway, Sweden and Finland, at an average speed of 60 km/h.

Despite challenging weather conditions, Wilthil and Borchgrevink achieved just under 5.0 l/100 km fuel-efficiency during the 30-hour drive, a 23 per cent improvement on the model’s official figure.*

The all-new Ford Fiesta went on sale in Europe earlier this year, delivering from 3.2 l/100 km fuel-efficiency and 82 g/km CO2 emissions,* with fuel-efficient engines supported by technology that automatically stops the engine when stationary in traffic and restarts quickly when moving off again, and an Eco button for manual gearboxes that adjusts engine and throttle settings to help drivers save even more fuel when desired.

The Ford Ranger is Europe’s best-selling pickup. Ford sold 31,000 Rangers in Europe up to September year-to-date. **

CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY PUTS FORD AMONG WORLD’S MOST ETHICAL COMPANIES FOR EIGHTH STRAIGHT YEAR
    • 2017 marks the eighth year in a row Ford Motor Company has been named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute
    • The honor recognizes Ford’s focus on being a good corporate citizen, which includes supply chain sustainability, responsible mineral sourcing and initiatives like the Partnership for a Cleaner Environment
    • Each year, the Ethisphere Institute recognizes the world’s top companies for driving positive change by mandating ethical practices and promoting corporate citizenship as well as responsible governance and leadership

With its focus on being a good corporate citizen, Ford Motor Company has been named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for the eighth straight year – the longest streak for any auto manufacturer.

Ford’s commitment to ethics is evident in programs aimed at monitoring human rights and safe working conditions, sourcing conflict-free minerals, to programs such as the Partnership for a Cleaner Environment, which is aimed at encouraging sustainability through Ford’s supply chain.

Ford also fosters long-term relationships with suppliers through active engagement, which includes sharing best practices, as well as providing training and evaluations to ensure suppliers meet both legal requirements and Ford standards.

“Strong ethics and corporate citizenship are the foundation of our business philosophy, which demonstrates to our customers what we stand for as a company,” said Bill Ford, Ford Motor Company Executive Chairman. “This honor is a reflection of Ford’s core values, and it shows that our employees are continuing to make the right decisions every day for all of our stakeholders.”

Ethisphere’s list of the World’s Most Ethical Companies acknowledges and honors companies that recognize they have a role in society to influence or drive a positive change. These companies consider their employees, investors, customers and other key stakeholders when taking action, while their values and culture align with the decisions they make every day.

“Companies we’ve honored as World’s Most Ethical take a novel response to the shift in societal expectations, constant redefinition of laws and regulations, and the geo-political climate,” said Timothy Erblich, Ethisphere’s Chief Executive Officer. “We’ve seen how Ford responds to these challenges, while still investing in communities where they reside and embracing ethical strategies across the globe, as a sustainable business advantage.”

For its efforts, Ford has been recognized by several third-party organizations, including:

SIDE-BY-SIDE 1965, 2015 MUSTANG DISPLAY SHOWCASES 50 YEARS OF INNOVATION AT NATIONAL INVENTORS HALL OF FAME MUSEUM
    • Ford and the National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum will debut a permanent Mustang display that uniquely fuses 50 years of history by combining a 1965 Mustang and a 2015 model – both split lengthwise – with two functional driver compartments
    • Mustang was chosen as a symbol of automotive innovation over the last 50 years
    • Ford Motor Company founder Henry Ford will be highlighted at the National Inventors Hall of Fame

DEARBORN, Mich., May 03, 2016 – Ford and the National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum (NIHF) are set to unveil a one-of-a-kind Mustang that marries a 1965 model to a 2015 model in a unique side-by-side display for the National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum.

The split-personality Mustang is part of a new, permanent Intellectual Property Power™ Exhibit   at the National Inventors Hall of Fame museum on the United States Patent and Trademark Office Campus in Alexandria, Virginia. The Mustang, along with other exhibits, Museum exhibits, including the Mustang, celebrate the story of intellectual property and illuminates its significance to progress, innovation, and culture in America, as well as how trademarks, patents, and other forms of intellectual property make modern amenities possible. The interactive display is designed to highlight the importance of patents and the tremendous march of technology over the decades. It calls out various patents in the current vehicle, as well as those in the original pony car.

The NIHF sought out Ford as its partner for the project because the company has played such an important part in the long history of American innovation with the Mustang being such an icon for half a century. Ford and its employee volunteers have also been involved for the past 20 years with Camp Invention, a program of NIHF. Camp Invention is one of the nation’s premier summer enrichment programs and leverages hands-on activities to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and builds 21st century skills.

When Mustang was launched, no specific styling patents were granted. Only after the car proved such a huge success – selling more than 1 million cars in its first 18 months – were styling patents even considered and applied for over time.

“Everything moved so fast in the design and run-up to production of the original Mustang that there were no styling patents issued back then,” says Chris Danowski, Ford director of technology commercialization and intellectual property licensing. “Now look at the current car; 2015 Mustang Convertible alone was granted 36 styling patents, which ensure the unique look stays with the car. It also has many unique functional patents for things like the airbag structures, 911 Assist® and so many other technologies baked right in.”

In 1965, Mustang utilized more than 100 of Ford’s existing functional patents. Those patents reflect some of the touches customers loved back then, including a rear-seat speaker and a power convertible top. Normal conveniences we now take for granted were also involved, like Patent 3,271,540 – the origin of Ford’s self-canceling turn signal.

Today, Mustang is a wellspring of creative design and engineering. The car introduced the first passenger knee airbag system packaged inside the glove box door, with 15 patents granted. It debuted electronic line-lock, along with standard launch control – designed to help bracket racers achieve more consistent performance at the drag strip. Mustang incorporates features specific to modern times, with patented relief in the seat cushion to allow a wallet or phone in an occupant’s back pocket to protrude further into the seat for more comfort.

Many of these patents and more will be illustrated in the display, crafted by Classic Design Concepts, which combines about 60 percent of the driver’s compartment of the original Mustang and about 60 percent that of a new pony car – both including the console area and technology of their times. The left side consists of a reproduction 1965 left-hand-drive Mustang licensed for modern production by Ford and built to the same specifications as the original car – in itself an example of the licensing benefits of intellectual property. The other side is a right-hand-drive 2015 Mustang that is sold in several of the 150 countries where the car is now available.

Visitors to the museum will be able to sit in either side of the car and directly compare features and styling details; From the AM radio, roll-up window, vent air window, and optional retractable color-keyed and seat belts available in 1965, to the working touch screen display in the 2015 model. Some patents and other intellectual property will be displayed on accompanying monitors and over speakers. Visitors to the display will also be able to hear the sounds of the original 1965 Mustang V8 engine and a 2015 Mustang V8 engine at idle.

At the May 4 unveiling ceremony, Ford Motor Company founder Henry Ford will also be highlighted at the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Ford continued to outpace European auto industry growth in February on the strength of rising demand for its SUVs, commercial vehicles and large cars.
    • February volume and market share:
      • European 20 markets*: Ford sold 91,700 units, up 18% compared with February 2015; Ford market share at 7.5%, up 0.3 percentage points
      • European 50 markets**: Ford sold 104,500 units, up 17% versus an industry rise of 10%; Ford’s Europe 50 market share up 0.4 percentage points to 7.3%
    • Sales channels: Ford sales in higher value retail and fleet channels accounted for 75% of its passenger car sales, 7 percentage points above industry average
    • Commercial vehicles: Up 17%; best February sales since 1993; market share at 11.7%
    • SUVs: EcoSport and Kuga sales up more than a third; New Kuga and all-new Edge SUV to launch later this year
    • Large cars: Sales of Mondeo up 19%; S-MAX sales more than tripled; Galaxy sales more than doubled
    • Performance cars: Combined sales of Fiesta ST, Focus ST, Mustang sales almost tripled
    • Outlook: This year, Ford will expand its upscale Ford Vignale line, introduce the new Kuga and all-new Edge SUVs, new Fiesta ST200 and Focus RS performance cars, the all-new KA+ in the growing B value segment, as well as the freshened Ranger pick-up

Ford sold 91,700 vehicles in February in its 20 traditional European markets, up 18 percent over last year and the company’s best February sales since 2010.  Outpacing industry growth of 14 percent, Ford saw its market share in February increase by 0.3 percentage points to 7.5 percent.

Across all of its 50 European markets, Ford sold 104,500 vehicles – up 17 percent vs an industry growth of 10 percent – and driving Ford’s market share up 0.4 percentage points to 7.3 percent.

“Ford of Europe is off to a very fast start to 2016 and we are growing even faster than the industry,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe.  “We are growing and gaining market share with our fresh cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles, and — unlike much of the industry — we are pulling back from rental car sales and dealer self-registrations that can erode brand value and residuals.”

    Sales channels:
Ford’s sales in higher value sales channels were markedly up in February. Retail and fleet sales accounted for 75 percent of Ford’s car sales in February – 7 percentage points better than the industry average.

    Commercial vehicles:
Ford CV vehicle sales enjoyed a strong month, increasing by 17 percent in February on growing demand for the new and expanded Transit range and the Ranger pickup. It was the best February for Ford CV sales since 1993. Ranger sales were up 26 percent, and sales of the Transit Connect increased 54 percent. Our share of the commercial vehicle market was 11.7 percent.

    SUVs:
Ford’s drive to increase its SUV sales continued in February, with the EcoSport compact SUV and Kuga midsize SUV sales increasing by more than one-third. Due to growing demand for its SUVs and with the launch of the all-new Edge large SUV in the first half of 2016, Ford expects its SUV sales to grow by about 30 percent in 2016 compared with 2015, and to break the 200,000 sales barrier for the first time ever in Europe.

    Large Cars:
Mondeo sales were up 19%, whilst sales of S-MAX more than tripled and Galaxy more than doubled vs the same month last year.

    Performance:
Combined sales of Ford’s current performance line-up – including the Fiesta ST, Focus ST and Focus ST diesel, and Mustang – almost tripled vs February last year. With the launch of the new Focus RS, Ford expects record sales of performance cars in Europe this year. In total, some 40,000 Ford performance cars are expected to be sold in 2016 – a 50 percent improvement on 2015 which itself saw performance car sales rise by 61 percent.

    Year-to-date sales:
With total vehicle sales of 188,700 vehicles in its 20 traditional European markets, it was the best combined January/February period for Ford since 2010. This was a 13 percent increase compared with the first two months 2015, and about 3 percentage points better than industry growth. Ford market share increased by 0.2 percentage points to 7.7 percent.

Across all of its 50 European markets, Ford sold a total of 209,800 vehicles – up 12.5 percent vs an industry growth of just 6.5 percent – and driving Ford’s market share up 0.4 of a percentage point to 7.4 percent.

    Outlook:
Ford, which gained market share in 2014 and 2015, announced last week at the Geneva Motor Show it is further expanding its line-up in key market segments.

    • Ford will bolster its SUV line-up with the launch of new Kuga and Edge in the second half of the year.
    • In the performance arena, Ford begins delivering the new Focus RS to dealers this month and the new Fiesta ST200 later in the year.
    • Ford is expanding its upscale Vignale line with three new models this year – S-MAX Vignale, Edge Vignale and Kuga Vignale.  Mondeo Vignale went on sale last year
    • An all-new vehicle called KA+ will go on sale later this year taking to meet growing demand for value-priced small cars.
