Ford today revealed the first teaser image of the company’s new Mustang-inspired utility vehicle – the first new model from the Ford Team Edison group assembled specifically to develop electrified vehicles for markets worldwide.

Darren Palmer is global product development director in Ford Team Edison – a dedicated, cross-functional team based in new offices in downtown Detroit, US. The team has been given licence to operate in a completely different and innovative way to develop electric vehicles for a market accelerating at an exponential rate.

Tasked to move fast and come together quickly to solve both common problems and the unique challenges presented by each individual market, Team Edison has embraced a “no stripes mentality” to encourage ideas from different viewpoints. Team Edison is also taking a fresh approach to developing prototype products. Low-fidelity prototypes that can be developed faster – even out of materials such as cardboard where appropriate – enable more flexibility to learn and iterate, and deliver truly intuitive and innovative designs.

“Electric vehicle customers are buying into the future and our team is 100 per cent focussed on not only delivering vehicles they will love, but providing an entire electric vehicle ecosystem that works flawlessly,” Palmer said.

Ford’s all-new Mustang-inspired fully-electric performance utility arrives in 2020 with targeted range of 300 miles. Ford is investing $11 billion and plans to deliver 16 fully electric vehicles within a global portfolio of 40 electrified vehicles through 2022.

  • All-new Ford Focus awarded maximum 5-star safety rating by Euro NCAP independent crash test authority under stringent new testing protocols
  • Technology that can detect cyclists in addition to pedestrians and vehicles, and brake to prevent collisions, among numerous features that contribute to 5-star rating
  • Focus – first deliveries of which are now underway – scores maximum points in side impact tests supported by advanced body structure and ultra-high strength materials

COLOGNE, Germany, July 18, 2018 – The all-new Ford Focus has been awarded the maximum 5-star safety rating by independent crash test authority Euro NCAP – one of the first vehicles to be awarded the highest rating under new, more stringent Euro NCAP testing protocols.

Focus delivers sophisticated features designed to help prevent or mitigate the impact of an accident, including Ford’s Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection – commended by Euro NCAP – which can detect people in or near the road ahead, or who may cross the vehicle’s path. The system automatically applies the brakes if it detects a potential collision and the driver does not respond to warnings; can now also detect cyclists; and functions in the dark using light from the headlamps.

Euro NCAP awarded high scores to Focus for both adult and child occupant protection – supported by a 40 per cent increase in front crash load capability from Ford’s all-new C2 architecture, and a body structure comprising 33 per cent ultra-high strength and press-hardened boron steels.

Focus also achieved maximum scores in tests designed to replicate car-to-car side impacts. The first all-new Focus vehicles are now on their way to customers in Europe.

“Think back to when you took your driving test, and how hard you had to concentrate to be safe on the road. Driving hasn’t become any less demanding – we just become more accustomed to pressure. Technologies like Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection will reduce the demand on drivers, helping them focus their attention and be less stressed, and more confident, at the wheel,” said Helmut Reder, Ford global vehicle line director C-car.

More comfortable, less demanding and safer

The all-new Ford Focus introduces a wider range of advanced driver assistance features than any Ford vehicle before, enabled by three radars, two cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors. These include:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control now enhanced with Stop & Go, Speed Sign Recognition and Lane-Centring for effortlessly negotiating stop-start traffic, and supported by Lane Keeping Aid and Intelligent Speed Limiter technologies commended by Euro NCAP

  • Ford’s Adaptive Front Lighting System with new camera-based Predictive curve light and Sign-based light that pre-adjust headlamp patterns for improved visibility by monitoring bends in the road and – for the first time in the industry – road signs

  • Evasive Steering Assist, which uses radar and camera to detect slower-moving and stationary vehicles ahead and provides steering support to enable drivers to manoeuvre around a vehicle if a collision is imminent

  • Wrong Way Alert, first available for customers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, which uses the windscreen mounted camera and information from the car’s navigation system to provide drivers with audible and visual warnings when driving through two “No Entry” signs on a motorway ramp

Should an accident occur, new Post-Collision Braking technology helps to reduce the impact of a potential secondary collision by automatically applying moderate brake pressure when an initial collision event is detected. Slowing the vehicle can potentially lessen injury to occupants and further damage to the vehicle.

In addition, Ford’s first Head-up display to be offered in Europe helps drivers focus their attention on the road ahead, while a Rear wide-view camera offers a 180-degree view to the rear of the vehicle for improved visibility when reversing from parking spaces or driveways.

Ford’s Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert warns drivers reversing out of a parking space of vehicles that may soon be crossing behind them, and can for the first time now apply the brakes to avoid or mitigate the effects of collisions if drivers do not respond to warnings.

The all-new Focus is on sale across Europe now in five-door hatchback, wagon and in selected markets four-door body styles, offered in a comprehensive model line-up that includes the stylish Focus Trend and Titanium, sporty Focus ST-Line, and the upscale Focus Vignale. The first Focus Active crossover will be available later this year.

  • Ford is to extend research into the use in urban areas of plug-in hybrid electric vans that run solely on electric power for most city trips
  • Working with the regional government of Valencia and the Valencia City leadership, the company seeks to better understand benefits both for the environment and for customers
  • The Transit Custom vans, already on trial in London, feature advanced electric powertrain, 1.0litre EcoBoost engine extends battery range
  • VALENCIA, Spain, May 9, 2018 – Among the toughest working environments for vans, cities offer significant challenges to moving people and delivering goods and services. Ford, which is already investigating how plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) could help in London, today announced it would also begin testing in Valencia, Spain.

The collaboration between Ford Smart Mobility, the regional government of Valencia and the Valencia City leadership, is designed to see how Transit Custom PHEV fleets could contribute to cleaner air targets and enhanced productivity.

“At Ford, we are committed to tackling urban mobility challenges, moving people and delivering goods and services through innovation and technology,” said Steven Armstrong, president and CEO, Ford of Europe, Middle East & Africa. “As no two cities are alike, it is vital that we look at the mobility issue from a variety of perspectives. Our research in Valencia will help us gain a meaningful understanding of the benefits that small and medium fleets running primarily on electric power can bring.”

Ford’s partnerships with the Generalitat Valenciana and the city of Valencia, not only complements testing in London, but reflects an investment of $11 billion that Ford is making in its electrified portfolio to include 40 electrified vehicles globally, including 16 full battery electric vehicles by 2022.

The focus in the Spanish city will be more regarding the use of small and medium fleets of Transit Custom PHEVs that are driven solely by an electric motor with a zero-emission target range of more than 50 kilometres (31 miles). The award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine serves as a range extender, eliminating range anxiety by charging the on-board batteries when longer trips are required.*

Scheduled for volume production in 2019, the Transit PHEV project reaffirms Ford’s commitment to Spain and Valencia as one of its most important manufacturing locations in Europe. Ford has invested more than €2.9 billion in Valencia since 2011, and in November 2017 Ford announced investment of more than €750 million in its Valencia Vehicle Operations to build the next generation Ford Kuga.

“Environmental and mobility challenges faced by cities like Valencia can only be addressed by strong leadership and bold innovation,” said Ximo Puig, Generalitat Valenciana President at the launch event. “We are delighted that Ford continues its commitment to the Comunitat Valenciana by bringing its innovative technologies to the city.”

Equipped with telematics and geofencing technology, twenty Transit Custom PHEV vans, are being used for the 12-month trial in London that Ford launched earlier this year, working with Transport for London and a variety of fleet customers, ranging from the Metropolitan Police to courier services and construction firms.

The following speech was given by Steven Armstrong, Group Vice President and President, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Ford Motor Company at the 2017 Handelsblatt Auto-Gipfel  event in Sindelfingen, Germany:

It’s a real pleasure to be here. Jim Farley was at the Auto-Gipfel last year – he said that this was one of the most important gatherings of automotive leaders in Europe and I can see absolutely, he was right. We all know our industry is in a moment of massive transformation.
Gabor set the scene, and Dieter Zetsche and Matthias Müller gave us a frank account of the challenges they face.

I want to do the same but also shine a light on some of the possibilities that we at Ford see
Three weeks ago our new CEO, Jim Hackett set out the Ford story – his view of the future.
New smart vehicles will pair or thrive in new transportation operating systems in cities. Our commitment to this means we will be more evolved to capitalize on new business opportunities in new mobility and transport services.

Cars and vans have always connected A to B via roads, highways, freeways, autobahns. But now they will be embedded in more complex physical and digital networks – our cities. And as we know, this century, the 21st century, is the century of the city.

Today just over half of the world’s population already live in cities. The UN estimates this will rise to 66% by 2050 – that’s two and a half billion more people living in urban areas.

Cities are drawing millions of us in as they promise opportunity, vibrancy and excitement – however, they also promise us traffic! Easy to see here in and around Stuttgart.

A rise in people means a rise in vehicles, and our beautiful cities here in Europe are struggling to cope.  Ageing infrastructure is creaking and our customers are feeling frustrated.   Congestion jams up all of our lives and is costly in many ways.

Economists can tell you what this means in terms of lost GDP but in our lives we may feel the loss in time. In Europe in 2016, we spent an average of 91 hours in traffic.

That’s equivalent to more than two working weeks – giving that back to people to spend with their friends and families would surely be one of the greatest gifts.

Time is freedom. And freedom has always been central to the promise made by Henry Ford over 100 years ago – to open the highways to all mankind. The challenge now is the same but different.  Back then we wanted to give people the opportunity to explore.  To extend their horizons to seek new opportunity and achieve the great American dream.
Now the mission is to help our customers navigate their lives by giving them the most frictionless journeys in more complex and different environments. Ford Motor Company was built on the belief that freedom of movement drives human progress. And in turn we need to ensure that the services around them can be seamlessly delivered to enhance our lives or even just keep them running to plan.

As we know, online shopping has exploded in the last decade with over 4bn parcels being delivered each year in our European cities.  This is still growing exponentially.
At the same time, we also need to keep our shops in city centres and malls fully stocked.
And most importantly we need healthcare, emergency and social services to be immediately accessible when we need it most – not stuck in traffic.

The problem is more vehicles means increased competition for a place in our most valuable public space – our roads.

Cities are made of places and spaces. When we visualise cities it is often the squares and parks that come to mind – yet we forget the sheer scale of our streets and roads. They represent the biggest public investment too – and if we can help make them work better, we will see leaps in productivity, growth and well-being.

This is key to Ford’s vision of mobility, our aim of being the world’s most trusted mobility company  – smart vehicles in a smart world.

This is not a thing we can do on our own. This involves the newest of collaborations – with cities and their leaders, with public services, with data scientists, start-ups and many others. And it needs the oldest of skills – understanding the customer and their needs, desires and passions.
The City of Tomorrow will need different infrastructure. As electric vehicles increase, the demand for electricity threatens to overwhelm the existing grid. The gain is massive in terms of reduced pollution, the challenge great in terms of the need for new and better networks of energy distribution.

The space in cities is ultimately a finite resource that will need to be managed effectively and efficiently.

We are used to the old patterns of bikes, buses, trams, taxis and private cars sharing space. But they mainly exist in parallel – aligning them so that they are better integrated will meet the needs of citizens who want a seamless, stress-free journey. These changes will make cities more liveable.

But to reach this innovation is needed, which is why we are working on all aspects of mobility – all elements of the journey.

There’s Chariot – the crowd-sourced shuttle service, now in four US cities. Here in Germany we have FordPass, the app allowing customers access to bikes in Cologne and Dusseldorf and a nationwide fleet of Call-a-bike units, which supplements the Ford Car-sharing offering.

And we don’t neglect the classic form of mobility – walking. We collaborated with a smart cities start up in London to create a network of Ford Smart Benches – located in busy inner city pedestrian areas these seats will offer wifi and mobile charging – an urban pit-stop if you like. And they will collect data on CO2 levels, noise, humidity and temperature – providing information to local government for free.

Our growing team based at the new European Ford Smart Mobility office opened just a few weeks ago in London will target near-term development of smart mobility technologies while focusing on the specific requirements of European cities. Co-located in East London with a hub of world-class digital companies, academic institutions, start-ups, and existing partners, we will radically boost our collaboration in the new world.

Because collaboration – not just leadership – will be at the heart of building the smart cities we need for the future.

But what excites me the most is our work in Commercial Vehicles. The Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle trial in London – testing telematics, contributing to cleaner air and feeding into our Transit Custom plug-in hybrid – in production in 2019.

And our partnership with Streetscooter here in Germany adding electric delivery vehicles to our market leading CV line up.

So we know that all of this represents unprecedented change.  As a team we talk about leaping ahead of what is currently predicted and that requires of us real imagination. We have to imagine the future and then build it. How can we do that? By showing, not merely telling.

If, as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words then I say a Virtual Reality simulation must be worth a novel!

I would now like to share with you a glimpse of what we think is to come – just one of our ideas for a future autonomous delivery solution.

A world of autonomous vehicles that serves our customers with just a swipe of a tablet.  Please put your headsets on – you will find them beneath your seats. Let’s watch.

Now, that’s just one light iteration of the future, one imagined use case of million use cases but it highlights some of the main themes: Ease, integration, efficiency and new ways of living. And it’s easy to start to see other uses – the supply of prescription medicines after a virtual appointment with your doctor or even the delivery of parts to an elevator engineer high up an apartment block.

New ways of seeing mobility lead to new ways of delivering for our customers in a modern setting. We at Ford are excited about the possibilities ahead and the Freedom of this progress.

MAKE WAY FOR HOLOGRAMS: NEW MIXED REALITY TECHNOLOGY MEETS CAR DESIGN AS FORD TESTS MICROSOFT HOLOLENS GLOBALLY

    • Ford is expanding testing of Microsoft HoloLens mixed reality technology globally to gain speed in designing more stylish vehicles for its customers
    • New technology allows designers wearing wireless headsets to see several digital designs and parts as if these were already incorporated into a physical vehicle; this is helping Ford explore more design proposals while shaving time off design and engineering processes that can take years
    • For example, evaluating a vehicle’s side mirror aesthetics and how that affects a driver’s view normally takes days or weeks, but can now be done in minutes, even seconds

Ford designers have been swapping some clay-sculpting steels and rakes for mixed reality headsets and visualization software that can change vehicle design elements – side mirrors, grilles, vehicle interiors and more – in mere seconds.

Designers have been piloting Microsoft HoloLens technology for a year now in Ford’s Dearborn studios, allowing them to see proposed virtual design elements as if these pieces were part of physical vehicles. They’ve been able to explore different shapes, sizes and textures of future vehicle attributes in minutes and hours instead of the weeks and months it can take to create clay models. And now, Ford is expanding this pioneering testing across the globe.

“It’s amazing we can combine the old and the new – clay models and holograms – in a way that both saves time and allows designers to experiment and iterate quickly to dream up even more stylish, clever vehicles,” says Jim Holland, Ford vice president, vehicle component and systems engineering. “Microsoft HoloLens is a powerful tool for designers as we continue to reimagine vehicles and mobility experiences in fast-changing times.”

HoloLens technology uses mixed reality, which enables designers to see holograms in photo-quality backdrops through wire-free headsets. They can scroll and preview at the flick of a finger through numerous design variations projected virtually onto an actual car or clay model.

“We may not be able to teleport yet, but HoloLens allows us to review full-size 3D designs with designers and engineers around the world in real time,” says Craig Wetzel, Ford manager, design technical operations. “And we’ve only just scratched the surface, so possibilities for the future seem almost limitless. This is very exciting.”

    Seeing the future
As designers wearing headsets move around an actual vehicle, the Microsoft HoloLens scans and maps the environment far more accurately than GPS to render holograms and images from the angle at which the vehicle is being viewed. A Windows 10 computer embedded in the headsets brings the power of the operating system to a holographic device that is untethered, wearable and mobile. Traditionally, designers and engineers have to wear headsets that rely on cables tethered to a PC.

Designers see 3D holographic images of themes and features as though these elements were already part of the vehicle – allowing them to quickly evaluate the design, make changes, and determine styling options earlier in development.

“With HoloLens, we can instantly flip through virtual representations to decide which direction they should go,” says Michael Smith, Ford design manager. “As a designer, you want to show, not just tell. This is much more compelling.”

Ford has adapted HoloLens technology to enable designers to collaborate with engineers to better understand the customer experience, too. For example, the technology allows a designer and engineer to evaluate in near-real time how a new side mirror looks aesthetically, as well as the customer’s view of the vehicle’s surroundings.

Whereas today it can take days, even weeks, to study a grille design, HoloLens allows designers and engineers to explore a variety of different iterations in a matter of hours. The headsets can even be synced to allow multiple team members to view a design simultaneously, making collaboration easy. They can also record audio notes – high-tech “sticky notes” – for team members working in other time zones or off-site.

Beyond the global design test, Ford is investigating how to bring HoloLens technology into more engineering development processes to further bolster the company’s lead in using advanced visualization technologies such as virtual reality.

“HoloLens allows a whole team of people to collaborate, share and experience ideas together,” says Elizabeth Baron, Ford virtual reality and advanced visualization technical specialist. “Mixing virtual and physical models is exciting, because it helps our designers and engineers communicate effectively and ideate to see what the future looks like earlier in the process. This allows great freedom and efficiency in how prototypes are created or changed.”

Intelligent All Wheel Drive measures how the car’s wheels are gripping the road surface and can adjust torque delivery up to 50/50 between the front and rear wheels in under 20 milliseconds – twenty times quicker than it takes to blink. The system seamlessly transitions torque between all four wheels and provides a more secure footing on the road especially in slippery conditions.

Ford’s all-new 1.5-litre EcoBlue diesel engine is designed to deliver higher power for improved performance, alongside reduced CO2 emissions. The refined four-cylinder engine features innovative technologies, including:

    • Low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation combined with water-air charge cooling for more efficient combustion and reduced emissions
    • An integrated intake manifold for optimised engine breathing
    • Low-inertia turbocharging for faster, more controllable turbo response, featuring rocket engine materials designed for high temperature applications
    • A high-pressure fuel injection system that is more responsive, quieter, and offers more precise fuel delivery

A 125 PS 1.5-litre EcoBlue diesel model with front-wheel drive and all-new, low-friction six-speed manual gearbox will offer even lower CO2 and greater fuel-efficiency from mid-2018. Ford’s 100 PS 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine combined with front-wheel drive and all-new six-speed manual gearbox will be available from launch.

Also offered will be Ford’s multi-award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol in 140 PS, 125 PS and – from mid-2018 – 100 PS power outputs, with a six-speed manual gearbox; and 125 PS with a six-speed automatic gearbox featuring steering-column mounted paddle-shifters for convenient gear-shifting.

The new EcoSport will continue to deliver ride and handling tuned specifically for customers in Europe, with optimised springs, dampers, spring aids, steering gear, rear axle twist beam, Electronic Stability Programme settings and steering assistance profiles.

    Rugged and refined styling
The new Ford EcoSport features bold, dynamic Ford SUV styling, reflecting that of the mid-sized Kuga and large Edge.

A sculpted bonnet with a central bulge delivers a cleaner front-end appearance, supported by heated washer nozzles hidden beneath the upper bonnet lip. The front-end design is dominated by a new large trapezoidal grille design and distinctive angular headlights that are now offered with a High Intensity Discharge lighting system, and incorporate stylish LED daytime running lights. Angular fog light housings complete a front three quarter profile that was inspired by the straps of a rucksack and designed to reflect an adventurous character.

EcoSport’s rear bumper and tail light designs also are revised to deliver a cleaner, more sculpted appearance. Customers can choose from 12 bold exterior colours, including Lightning Blue, Ruby Red and vibrant metallic orange shade, Tiger Eye; and can further personalise their SUV with the new contrasting extended painted roof colour option.

New 17- and 18-inch alloy wheel designs complement the rugged, sporty character, and are offered in a number of finishes, including Magnetic Low Gloss, Shadow Silver, Flash Grey and High Gloss Black. Customers continue to be able to choose a distinctive, boot-mounted spare wheel option.

EcoSport now also delivers a new level of interior refinement with easier to use controls and soft-touch materials, and a new centre console ergonomically designed for easy operation and featuring fewer buttons. New seats designs are optimised for greater front and rear occupant comfort, and deliver a more upscale feel including available partial leather. Occupants can also match the ambience to their mood with adjustable interior lighting that can be set to one of seven colours.

The interior features a host of smart stowage solutions, including a new height adjustable boot floor that can be raised to provide concealed storage, or lowered to increase luggage capacity to 334 litres. A new centre console features a built-in folding, sliding passenger armrest with a storage compartment ideal for tablet computers or snacks.

The new EcoSport line-up will for the first time include the sporty new EcoSport ST-Line variant, joining the Edge ST-Line, Fiesta ST-Line, Focus ST-Line, Kuga ST-Line, Mondeo ST-Line and S-MAX ST-Line models that offer bold styling and sports-tuned driving dynamics alongside powerful and efficient EcoBoost petrol and TDCi diesel engines.

The EcoSport ST-Line delivers unique Ford Performance-inspired bumpers and side skirts, black-finish roof rails and headlight bezels, 17-inch Dark Tarnish alloy wheels, ST-Line badging and extended painted roof and door mirrors as standard. The interior offers a unique ST-Line leather-trimmed flat-bottomed steering wheel; unique partial leather seats featuring Miko®-Dinamica inserts – an ecological suede made from recycled polyester – and red stitching; leather handbrake lever and gear knob; ST-Line branded scuff plates; and stainless steel sports pedals.

    Sophisticated driver assistance technology
The new Ford EcoSport builds on the commanding SUV driving position and rewarding Ford driving dynamics to deliver an even easier and more enjoyable driving experience using advanced technologies.

Ford’s sophisticated SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto™. SYNC 3 is supported by EcoSport’s floating, 8-inch colour touchscreen, which can be operated with pinch and swipe gestures. Also offered with SYNC 3 is a floating 6.5-inch colour touchscreen. A 4.2-inch colour screen is offered in combination with Bluetooth connectivity and two USB inputs.

A new B&O PLAY sound system offers an elevated audio experience; featuring ten speakers, including boot-mounted subwoofer and a mid-range speaker in the centre of the dash, the system has been specifically calibrated for EcoSport, and is controlled by the latest Digital Signal Processing Amplifier that allows for precise equalisation and audio mixing, including a Surround Sound setting.

EcoSport for the first time delivers Cruise Control with Adjustable Speed Limiter that helps drivers keep within speed limits, and a Rear View Camera that makes parking more efficient and safer.

Available automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers remove some of the stresses of driving and enable customers to better concentrate on the road ahead, while a heated steering wheel and Electronic Automatic Temperature Control further improve comfort. More convenience is offered with a new 4.2-inch digital instrument cluster that makes key driving information easier to access, and power-foldable mirrors that are heated for quicker getaways on frosty mornings.

Further driver assistance technologies include Ford’s Blind Spot Information System that can alert the driver to vehicles approaching alongside, and standard Roll Stability Control that adjusts engine torque and braking to help drivers maintain control.

Improved occupant protection now includes driver and passenger front airbags; a driver knee airbag; new side airbags that provide extra thorax protection and are designed to direct the occupant away from an impact; and new curtain airbags that provide maximum side-impact coverage. EcoSport is also more secure than ever before, with a standard perimeter alarm.

“We’ve enhanced the quality, technology and versatility of the new Ford EcoSport to deliver more of the confidence and control that compact SUV customers want,” said Gary Boes, global B-car vehicle line director, Ford Motor Company. “Drivers will feel more comfortable and self-assured than ever at the wheel.”

GAMING HELPS FORD SHARE A PASSION FOR DRIVING WITH MORE CONSUMERS THAN EVER BEFORE

The virtual driving simulator series Forza Motorsport acts as a digital showroom for Ford, enabling more consumers than ever before to experience rare, high-performance vehicles like the Ford GT.

At Gamescom – Europe’s biggest interactive games trade fair – experts from Ford and Microsoft are participating in a panel discussion about the growing relevance of digital driving experiences for consumers.

Forza Motorsport 6 players have collectively spent more than 398 years driving a total of more than 466 million kilometres (290 million miles) in Ford vehicles since the game’s launch in 2015. The Ford GT – the game’s cover star – is the most driven car in the game, having covered 66 million kilometres (41 million miles).

The Ford GT and the acclaimed Focus RS hot hatchback are among the Ford vehicles available to race in Forza. A Ford specialist worked with the game’s developers to ensure every virtual Ford model featured delivers the most accurate imitation of the real car.

Ford and Turn10 studios spent almost a year developing the virtual version of the Ford GT using real-world data from the supercar’s top-secret development process to deliver highly realistic looks, performance, and even engine and transmissions sounds.

In the future, Ford anticipates virtual reality technology could offer a convenient way for customers to test drive vehicles from the comfort of their homes.

    Immersive experiences at Gamescom

Visitors to Ford’s Gamescom stand will discover interactive activities, including the opportunity to experience the first-of-its-kind Ford Reality Check app using Google Daydream VR , created by Ford, Google and award-winning virtual reality studio Happy Finish.

The app brings to life the potentially fatal consequences of driving while distracted, casting users as a distracted driver picking up friends on the way to a party. Instant messages, phone calls and chatty passengers all compete for attention, sparking a series of near misses. The final distraction proves fatal due to the driver being distracted. The app’s creators hope it will help young people to develop safer driving practices.

Forza players can win the chance to drive the Focus RS on track with tuition from Ford Chip Ganassi Racing driver Harry Tincknell, by setting the fastest virtual lap of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit using the gaming pods at the Ford show stand.

Visitors also will be able to experience Tincknell’s real-world lap of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, Belgium, using 3D virtual reality headsets, while seated in the Focus RS.

Robotics enthusiasts can try their hand at programming a “YuMi” collaborative robot to perform tasks. Ford is among first auto makers to develop a new, closely integrated approach to car workers and collaborative robots working together on the assembly line. DJ Yoda and “YuMi” recently performed a set-list of tracks from 1976 onward to celebrate Fiesta’s 40th anniversary.

Fans of LEGO will appreciate the full-size Ford Chip Ganassi LEGO racing driver. Featuring detailed Ford racing overalls and racing helmet, the LEGO driver contains 67,252 bricks; stands 1839.6 mm (6 ft) tall; weighs 61 kg (134.5 lb); and took seven LEGO builders 304 work-hours to construct.

    Virtual reality beyond gaming
Virtual reality not only helps make Ford models accessible to more consumers, it helps Ford create vehicles, too.

Ford engineers use virtual reality in the development and production of vehicles, from immersive technologies that allow designers to fully experience a vehicle without the need for a physical prototype, to full-body motion capture systems that provide data on how an employee uses his or her body to move and complete tasks on the assembly line.

    Experience the real thing
Ford is displaying the Ford GT race car driven by Tincknell in the FIA World Endurance Championship at Gamescom. Last year Ford made an historic return to the iconic Le Mans 24 Hours race with the Ford GT race car taking victory in the LM GTE Pro class exactly 50 years after recording a 1-2-3 clean sweep at the 1966 race.

The Ford GT race car is based on the 347 km/h (216 mph) Ford GT road car – the fastest Ford production vehicle on the track ever – powered by 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost engine is SAE rated at 647 horsepower and 550 lb.-ft. of torque in U.S. specification.

The Ford Focus RS five-door hatchback – featuring a 350 PS 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, Ford Performance All Wheel Drive and Selectable Drive Modes, and the all-new Fiesta ST-Line – featuring sporty exterior and interior styling, and sports suspension, are also on show.

Welshman Osian Pryce made the perfect start to his first ever overseas World Rally Championship round in a four-wheel drive car at Rally Poland today (Thursday).

Pryce and co-driver Dale Furniss completed the opening test, a 1.55-mile (2.50km) crowd-pleaser close to the rally’s hometown, fourth in the all-important WRC2 class.

Osian joins the DMACK World Rally Team alongside countryman and tonight’s overall rally leader Elfyn Evans for this week’s Mikolajki-based event. Osian’s drive aboard a Ford Fiesta R5, tuned and tended by two-time world champion team M-Sport, is his prize from winning last year’s WRC-based Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy.

After final preparations, Osian admitted he was glad to get the big event underway.

“It’s nice to get in there, get a stage done and get settled in,” he said. “The stage itself went well, I enjoyed it. It’s really only a stage for the fans this one, but it was important to make no mistakes and we did that.”

Having completed the stage, Osian and Dale headed straight for the hotel after a quick debrief with the team.

“Running as part of the DMACK World Rally Team is an incredible opportunity,” said Osian. “These boys just do things at a completely different level, it’s amazing. Dale and I haven’t had to think about anything this week; normally we can be running around like headless chickens on a rally. But here, working with a professional team that competes on 13 rounds of the world championship year-in-year-out, the difference is incredible.

“Before we’ve even started the rally, the good thing about this prize is that it gives you an insight into what’s possible with hard work, dedication and a good bit of speed. I’ve had a glimpse of life on the right side of the world championship and I like it!”

Tomorrow’s stages take Osian and the rest of the crews east of the Masurian Lake District town of Mikolajki.

“I’m really looking forward to tomorrow,” said Osian. “It’ll be interesting to see what the weather’s going to do. We had a big storm last night and a huge one earlier today which forced the organisers to cancel the ceremonial start. It was absolutely pouring down. It would be nice if it stayed dry tomorrow, there are going to be so many spectators out there at the side of the road and nobody likes standing in the rain! For me, I don’t mind, I can’t do anything to change what the weather’s going to do, so I’m not going to worry about it.”

    Friday June 30

    Osian’s day starts: 0700

    Osian’s day finishes: 2000

    Number of stages: nine

    Competitive distance: 116.16km (72.18 miles)

    Total distance: 585.24km (363.66 miles)

    Longest stage: SS4/8 Swietajno 19.60km (12.17 miles)

Shortest stage: SS10 Super Special Mikolajki 2.50km (1.55 miles)
